The A-List of Bay Area Counterculture
The Z List aired on Hard Knock Radio, KPFA 94.1 FM on Friday, December 6, 2013. The podcast of this segment will be posted here soon, but in the meantime you can stream the HKR show in its entirety at KPFA.org (The Z List segment begins at the 00:34:52 mark).
This segment is dedicated to Nelson Mandela who passed away on December 5th at the age of 95. Below is one of my favorite live performance clips of Gil Scott-Heron, performing “Johannesburg” live at The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert.
The concert – also referred to as Artists United Against Apartheid, Freedomfest, Free Nelson Mandela Concert and Mandela Day – was held on June 11, 1988 at Wembley Stadium in London, England. With an estimated 72,000 people in attendance the event was broadcast to 67 countries to a viewing audience of 600 million.
