Oakland First Fridays Announces Events For January 4, 2012

Oakland First Fridays

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Oakland, CA) More than just a murmur, Oakland First Fridays is a phenomenon. Hailed by the New York Times as “an abundance of there here,” Oakland First Fridays is an internationally-acclaimed immersive art and community experience, which draws as many as 20,000 people of all ages each month.

Every First Friday between 5pm and 10pm, Oakland comes together with an “Open House” / ad-hoc street festival of art galleries, artist collectives, street artists, food trucks, food vendors, local artisans, performers, musicians, dancers, DJ’s, and poets.  Attendees to First Fridays come from all around the Bay Area and beyond to experience eye-catching art, eat great food, enjoy live music from all genres, and stroll through the amazing, eclectic, creative scene which has transformed Oakland’s cultural identity.

Please note that January’s First Friday features a smaller “footprint”: because of the city of Oakland’s holiday vacation, official street closures will happen on Telegraph Avenue from West Grand to 27th, as well as adjacent side streets. However, venues from 18th to 22nd streets will still be active.

As usual, Oakland First Fridays is brimming with events and activities. These include: the Bicycle Gallery, a large scale art project by Oakland artist Gregorio de Masi, which incorporates the “Steampunk Art Bicycle,” as part of “The Art Zone” (between 25th-26th Sts.); “Pop Up Show,” a collaborative exhibit by Pueblo Nuevo and Riseup Gallery at the EatUp, featuring art and murals by Amanda Lopez, Dignidade Rebelde, Mark Pricks, Miguel “Bounce” Perez, Plinio Hernandez, Ras Terms, Safety First, Shaun Burner, Stephen V. Williams, Treat U Nice, and Deborah Sklut, with posters and clothing by El Feo and music by 3rd Degree, Honey Knuckles, and Wonway Posibul (2025 Telegraph Ave.); a closing reception for “Metamorfosis” featuring DJ Fava Fav at Solespace (1714 Telegraph); music performances by the Tumbleweed Wanderers, Glimpse Trio, and Emily Moldy at Awaken Café (1429 Broadway); an opening reception for “Dichotomy of Art,” a new exhibit featuring James Gayles, Johnathan Blair, Lisa Alonzo, and Ruth Tabancay at the Joyce Gordon Gallery (406 14th St.); “Naked Ladies: Sexy. Raw. Owning It,”featuring members of Femme Cartel at Feelmore 510 (1703 Telegraph Ave.); ((Local 1200)) DJs Sake One, Tim Diesel, Willie Maze and DJ Fuze, with art prints and T-shirts by the TDK crew (Telegraph @ West Grand/23rd Sts.); a surrealist parlor game, “Exquisite Corpse,” projected on the Great Wall of Oakland (W Grand bet. Telegraph/Broadway); Winter Blend, an after-party with DJs Leydis, Mr. Lucky, and Green B at the New Parish (579 18th St.); and much, much more!

Attendees are encouraged not to drive but to bicycle, walk, or take public transit. Oakland First Fridays is accessible via BART’s 12th St. and 19th St. stations, the free B-Line Shuttle, and AC Transit lines 1/1R, 11, 12, 14, 18, 20, 26, 31, 40, 51A, 58L, 62, 72/72M/72R, and 88.
