Summer has arrived and The 15th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival is taking place right here in the San Francisco Bay Area, July 17-21! This year we welcome youth from around the globe, once again, to share their poems, speak their truth and participate in this life changing festival and the largest ongoing spoken word event in the world. We are excited to announce that this year’s Grand Slam Finals will be held at the historic Fox Theater in downtown Oakland on Saturday, July 21 at 7pm. Hosted by two living legends and powerhouse poets, Mayda Del Valle and Dennis Kim, it is sure to be a transformative and electrifying evening. Get your Grand Slam Finals tickets here and come witness the word for the very first in Oakland!

If you work at a nonprofit or are interested in starting one, come to Brave New Leaders on Wednesday, July 18 at John O’Connell for a day of trainings on strategic planning, fundraising, board development and other critical organizational development practices. Led by local and national experts in the field, Brave New Leaders will give you tangible skills to build out your vision. Lastly, we are putting out a call to all educators, teaching artists and ed students and administrators to participate in this year’s Brave New Teachers conference on Wednesday, July 18 at John O’Connell, for a day of activities focusing on trends in arts education, youth development and literacy. Featuring leading thinkers, practitioners and emerging artistic voices, Brave New Teachers will get at the future of arts education in and out of the classroom. You will leave with tangible tools to take back and apply to your own work. Registration also includes a ticket to the Grand Slam Finals on July 21 and a Brave New Voices on HBO DVD. Register now!

We are honored and grateful to have the partnerships of the Downtown Berkeley Association and the hosts of the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slams in the vibrant neighborhood of Downtown Berkeley. You can experience the powerful and electric performances of young poets from all over the world at the Aurora Theatre Company, David Brower Center, Hotel Shattuck Plaza, Pegasus Books, Subterranean Arthouse, The Marsh Arts Center, and YMCA PG&E Teen Center. Additionally, we are hosting the 4th Annual MC Olympics July 18 – 20. This Olympic Style MC competition features the best 13 – 19 year old MCs at the Brave New Voices Festival. MCs from cities across the United States and Overseas participate in a multi-round competition that lands the finalists on stage in front of the entire BNV community ripping the mic and repping their story. A fast track to Brave New Voices Glory, the BNV MC Olympics features guest performances from the hottest local Hip Hop in every city we visit.
