The Definitive Guide to Brave New Voices 2011 International Youth Poetry Slam Festival | July 20-23 | As Seen on HBO

50 Teams start the week and on Saturday, July 23, the final four BNV teams take center stage to see who will be crowned the 2011 Brave New Voices Grand Slam Champions at the SF Opera House. After an electrifying week of slams, workshops, open mics, and more, the poets perform one last time at the historic, 3,200-seat San Francisco Opera House. Four additional teams participating in the festival will share the stage and their words just for you. The Grand Slam Finals mark the culimination of the festival, so don’t miss out. Emceed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph with special guest judges George Watsky, Phil Bronstein, Michelle Tea, Beau Sia and more.

Quarter-Finals | July 22, 2011 | 10:00am & 2:00pm

The 50 slam teams compete in two bouts for the preliminary round of the poetry slam. Bouts take place simultaneously in 10 venues in San Francisco and Oakland. All quarter-finals are free so be sure to check out the amazing poets from around the world speak their truth at a location near you. Check here to see what teams are where.

San Francisco: Mission District (near 16th St/Mission and 24th St/Mission BART stations)

Oakland: Uptown District (near 19th St/Broadway BART station)

Watch for information about the Semi-Finals. Coming Saturday morning to Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Oakland Museum, and the Kaiser Performing Arts Center.

Thursday July 21 marks a day of artistic development for youth as well as organizational development for teachers and emerging nonprofit leaders. Three separate workshops will be taking place in Downtown Oakland.

BNV WRITING & PERFORMANCE WORKSHOPS
Oakland School for the Arts | Oakland | 1pm-5pm

These artistic workshops are led by leading spoken word artists, teaching artists, and educators in the Bay Area and Brave New Voices Network. All BNV participants will attend two writing & performance workshops, providing them with intensive opportunities to improve their art in conversation with youth from around the world. We’re sorry, but there is no more room for local youth to participate.

BRAVE NEW LEADERS CONFERENCE
Pro Arts Gallery | Oakland | 1pm-5pm

Simultaneous to the youth writing conference across the street, the Brave New Leaders sessions are geared for emerging nonprofit leaders. Trainings focus on fundraising, marketing, mission building and strategic planning, board development and more. Sign up hereSPACE IS LIMITED and includes a ticket to the Grand Slam Finals.

BRAVE NEW TEACHERS
Youth Radio | Oakland | 1pm- 5pm

Geared specifically for the classroom educator, the Brave New Teachers conference highlights best practices for incorporating poetry, spoken word and performance into the curricula.
