It gives me great pleasure to share with you a few heartfelt words from Martin Luther, the visionary behind the annual Bay Area gathering that we know as the Rebel Soul Festival (RSF).  If you haven’t yet had the chance to attend, we hope that you will get the opportunity to do so this year.  In its fifth year, RSF is indeed a gathering of some of the most talented artists.  We have 3 pairs of tickets to give away (details are  at the end of this post).

Welcome to the 5th Annual Rebel Soul Summer Music Fest (RSF).  I am your curator Martin Luther and I’m here to recruit you!!  This is the first year that we have included a range of artists from different genres and this is also the first year that we are teaming up with Michael O’Connor and The New Parish as host for this four day festival.  I started the RSF in 2007 because I wanted to be included in festivals and events that highlighted Bay Area talent.  I have some incredibly gifted friends and allies and they have remained agreeable to work with us to help keep the event going and growing. The RSF is a platform for self expression for poets, singers, musicians, dancers and even artists like videographers and painters.  We are here to have a great time and to advance the promotion of the Arts.

Previous performers who have graced the stage are Silk E, Tracy Bartlow, Too $hort, B’nai Rebel Front, The Kev Choice Ensemble and many others.  This year we are very excited to play host to Los Rakas (8/28) who will have an album release party and perform with special guests.  Bilal (8/29) has traveled across the country to bring his brand of Neo Soul Funk Fusion to many adoring fans. On the third day of the festival (8/30) I will perform with a few special guests including Kev Choice, to enliven and entertain the dedicated fans of my Rebel Soul Music genre/brand and on the fourth and last night (8/31) we will be treated to the incredible sounds of DaM-FunK who’s coming in from Los Angeles to bring his electro old school sound to the new Parish.

With continued support from Oakland and the greater San Francisco Bay Area’s music loving community, I hope this year will be better than all years previous and we look forward to seeing you in attendance. Every Night!

BNV GRAND SLAM FINALS

50 Teams start the week and on Saturday, July 23, the final four BNV teams take center stage to see who will be crowned the 2011 Brave New Voices Grand Slam Champions at the SF Opera House. After an electrifying week of slams, workshops, open mics, and more, the poets perform one last time at the historic, 3,200-seat San Francisco Opera House. Four additional teams participating in the festival will share the stage and their words just for you. The Grand Slam Finals mark the culimination of the festival, so don’t miss out. Emceed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph with special guest judges George Watsky, Phil Bronstein, Michelle Tea, Beau Sia and more.

These artistic workshops are led by leading spoken word artists, teaching artists, and educators in the Bay Area and Brave New Voices Network. All BNV participants will attend two writing & performance workshops, providing them with intensive opportunities to improve their art in conversation with youth from around the world. BRAVE NEW LEADERS CONFERENCE

Simultaneous to the youth writing conference across the street, the Brave New Leaders sessions are geared for emerging nonprofit leaders.
